Physical Education

The principle aim of our PE curriculum is to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of physical activity and a deep understanding of how physical activity contributes to their physical and mental well-being. As pupils progress throughout our school they develop a growing vocabulary of language specific to movement, exercise, health and well-being. The teaching of this vocabulary aims to encourage a critical engagement with PE where children can unpick what makes PE successful for them personally and as part of a team, as well as being able to explain the effects of physical activity on their bodies.

Pupils are given opportunities to participate in a range of physical activities and experiences both in school and as part of our wider learning community via the local secondary school. They learn to use their minds, bodies and communication skills to participate in PE on their own and with others. Children will experience different activities individually and as part of teams and groups. Extra-curricular PE activities will be celebrated and encouraged through participation in school clubs as well as sharing experiences of additional clubs children may access outside of school. We actively encourage children to seek opportunities to participate in sports and activities outside of school.

Throughout our PE curriculum, we endeavour to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence and confidence to participate positively in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage constructively in competitive sports and activities in a sporting manner
  • lead healthy, active lives
  • have a daily opportunity for structured physical activity
  • have regular, consistent practise of core key skills relevant to their developmental stage
