We make the most of every opportunity in all areas of the curriculum to teach and support children with developing and applying their reading skills.
Our school environment promotes reading with a well- resourced school library, reading places both within and outside of classrooms and regular displays of Top Reads and new authors.
We deliver a whole class phonics session on a daily basis to children from Reception , Year 1 and into year 2 to support the development of early reading skills. In addition, small group sessions may also be provided to support or give further challenge to pupils. The Letters and Sounds Programme is followed and supplemented and enriched with additional resources.
Children from year 2 (when ready) to year 6 are taught following the Devon Spelling Pathways programme and intervention is given as required through Project X Code (OUP) and Precision Teaching. (A short, daily, personalised programme).
All children take part in a weekly guided reading session with their teacher.
Reception and Year 1 children take home coloured banded reading books. These are either phonically decodable books (Project X – Oxford University Press and Big Cat Phonics – Collins) which allow them to develop and apply their phonic knowledge or books which enable children to develop a range of reading strategies
Children move from colour banded books to simple chapter books and then become a free reader. Progression from simple chapter books into choosing from the library is supported by staff and organisation of the library.
All children can also take home information books, quality picture books or other promoted themed linked books from the school library.
A parent’s role is vital in helping a child learn to read. We offer parent workshops for different ages of children every Autumn Term to support parents to do this effectively at home.
